Course Overview
Crane accidents due to undetected component failure are among the most consequential safety incidents on an offshore installation or industrial site. The Crane Inspector Training & Certification programme is built to prevent those incidents — by training inspectors who can identify failing components before they fail.
The course is ABS Class Approved and is aligned with the two governing standards for offshore pedestal-mounted crane inspection: API Specification 2C (7th Edition 2012) — design, testing, and construction of offshore pedestal-mounted cranes — and API Recommended Practice 2D (7th Edition 2014) — operation and maintenance of offshore cranes. The course covers the full body of information contained within both standards.
The programme runs as a three-day intensive — classroom theory blended with hands-on practical inspection on an actual offshore pedestal crane. Assessment is by combined Theory Test and Practical Test on the final day.
On successful completion, you receive an ABS Class Approved Crane Inspector Certificate that has no expiry — it is valid for lifetime. Once you complete the course, you hold the qualification for the rest of your career.
Target Audience
The Crane Inspector course is designed for professionals involved in crane installation, inspection, and maintenance — across offshore and industrial settings:
• QA/QC personnel responsible for crane installation and operations
• Government agencies that inspect cranes for regulatory compliance
• Third-party inspection (TPI) companies providing competence verification services
• Offshore operators and drilling contractors building in-house crane inspection capability
• Marine surveyors and consultants adding crane inspection to their portfolio
Aspiring offshore and overhead crane inspectors entering the profession
Curriculum
The course is structured as classroom theory plus hands-on practical exercises. The full body of information contained within API 2C and API 2D is covered.
The Crane Inspector course covers the full body of information contained within API Specification 2C (7th Edition 2012) and API Recommended Practice 2D (7th Edition 2014) — the two governing standards for offshore pedestal-mounted crane inspection. Three days are split between classroom theory and hands-on practical inspection on an actual offshore pedestal crane.
• Crane design & construction — critical components, rated loads, allowable stresses, design authentication, welding of critically stressed components, and non-destructive examination (NDE) including dye-penetrant procedures.
• Mechanical systems — swing assemblies, hoists, drum brakes, planetary brakes, clutches, gear cases, bearings, prime mover, boom and structurally critical components.
• Hydraulic systems — pumps, motors, luffing cylinders, check valves, flow control valves, directional and pressure control valves, hoses, reservoirs, coolers, filters.
• Electrical systems — motors, controls, panels, swing limit switches, voltage measurement on swing and hook panels.
• Friction systems — boom band brakes, control levers, torqmatic converter clutches.
• Hands-on practical (on an actual offshore pedestal crane) — wire rope inspection, boom and sheave inspection, hoist tear-down and troubleshooting, brake testing, clutch disassembly and adjustment, load and pull testing, emergency load-lowering procedures.
• Integrated throughout — records review, measurement-tool competence, regulatory compliance, structural-integrity assessment.
Assessment — combined Theory Test and Practical Test on the final day.
Delivery
The Crane Inspector course is delivered as a three-day in-person programme — classroom theory blended with hands-on practical inspection on an actual offshore pedestal crane. Course timing is 11:00 – 18:00 each day.
Cohorts run on demand — confirm a slot with admissions for the date that works for your team. Closed cohorts for QA/QC teams, TPI companies, and operator inspection departments are available at the EOA training centre or on-site at your facility.
Assessment at the end of the programme is by Theory Test and Practical Test. Successful candidates receive the ABS Class Approved Crane Inspector Certificate.
Study materials provided:
• Crane Inspection Book — comprehensive resource on inspection standards
Crane Inspection Log Book — for maintaining accurate inspection records on the job
Certification
On successful completion of the Theory and Practical Tests, you receive an ABS Class Approved Crane Inspector Certificate. Each certificate carries a unique reference number and is independently verifiable online via the EOA verification portal.
Validity: No expiry — the certificate is valid for lifetime. Once you complete the course, you hold the qualification for the rest of your career.
Recognition: The certificate is recognised by offshore operators, drilling contractors, third-party inspection companies, and QA/QC departments worldwide that work to ABS class and API 2C / 2D standards. It is widely accepted as evidence of competence for crane inspection roles on offshore platforms, MOUs, and adjacent industrial sites.
Why Take This Course
Build in-house crane inspection capability. Train your own QA/QC or maintenance team and eliminate ongoing third-party inspection costs for routine and periodic crane inspections.
Open a new revenue line (for TPI companies). Third-party inspection companies with ABS-approved certified inspectors can offer crane inspection as a standalone service line — adjacent to existing NDE, lifting equipment, and integrity services.
Reduce incident exposure. Crane component failures are among the highest-severity offshore incidents. A trained inspector on every site materially reduces exposure to dropped-object, structural-failure, and load-lowering incidents.
Meet regulatory and class society expectations. API 2C and API 2D are the references that classification societies and offshore operators expect inspectors to know. Walking onto a job site with an ABS-approved, API-aligned certificate is the cleanest possible documentary evidence of competence.
FAQs
Q1. Is the Elite Offshore Academy Crane Inspector course ABS Class Approved?
Yes. The course is approved by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and is aligned with API Specification 2C (7th Edition 2012) and API Recommended Practice 2D (7th Edition 2014).
Q2. How long is the Crane Inspector course and what is the delivery format?
Three days — classroom theory blended with hands-on practical inspection on an actual offshore pedestal crane. Course timing is 11:00 – 18:00 each day. Cohorts run on demand and can be scheduled around your team's availability.
Q3. How long is the Crane Inspector certificate valid?
The Crane Inspector Certificate has no expiry — it is valid for lifetime. Once you complete the course and pass the Theory and Practical Tests, you hold the qualification for the rest of your career.
Q4. What does the course cover — API 2C, API 2D, or both?
Both. The course covers the full body of information contained within API Specification 2C (design, testing, and construction of offshore pedestal-mounted cranes) and API Recommended Practice 2D (operation and maintenance of offshore cranes).
Q5. Is the assessment classroom-only, or also practical?
Both. Successful completion requires passing a Theory Test and a Practical Test on an actual offshore pedestal crane. We do not issue the certificate on theory assessment alone.
Q6. Who should take the Crane Inspector course?
QA/QC personnel responsible for crane operations; government agencies that inspect cranes; third-party inspection (TPI) companies; offshore operators and drilling contractors building in-house inspection capability; marine surveyors and consultants; and individual professionals aspiring to become certified crane inspectors.
Q7. Can the course be delivered on-site at our facility?
Yes. Closed cohorts for QA/QC teams, TPI companies, and operator inspection departments are available on-site at your facility — subject to a suitable practical-inspection crane being accessible. Speak with admissions for on-site cohort pricing.
Q8. How much does the Crane Inspector course cost?
The current tuition is Rs 75,000 per candidate (INR). Group bookings, corporate cohorts, and on-site delivery rates are available — contact admissions for a quote.
